Second letter is a copy of a letter to Cromwell Anson Jones from Anson Jones, last president of the Republic of Texas. \r\n\r\nMr Fields Letter to Cowing in 1867\r\n \r\nMr Cowing\r\n\r\nDear Sir The tract of land\r\nI have sould you, was my head right clame\r\nfrom the Texas Government as a single man\r\nit was acquired befor the Mexican War\r\naccording to Mexican Laws in 1837 or 8 \r\nI made a contract with E K Whightman\r\nwhich was never consummated to exchange\r\nit for a peace of land at the mouth of\r\nCones Creek in forty five I left Texas\r\nand was abstant until fifty seven\r\non my return I ascertained that the\r\npatent without my permission had\r\nbeen given by the state authorized\r\nto a strainger in Matagorda County\r\nallso that an instrament purporting\r\nto be a saile by Contract to have been\r\nput upon record in the above County\r\nconveying the above land to anderson\r\nJones for the consideration of five\r\nthousand Dollars done after the Contract\r\nwith K Whightman sould his intire\r\n----------------------------------------------------\r\nestate to a W Ludlow in which\r\nhe bound the Latter to carry out the\r\nContract with me I was told was\r\nrecorded in Matagorda and\r\nwas of the same date and witnessed\r\nby the persons at that infaver of\r\nJones at the time of the above\r\nrecord in faver of Jones from the\r\nbest information I have I was\r\nresiding in the island of Cuba and\r\nit was done without my knowledge\r\nor consent.\r\n\r\nJoseph E Fields\r\n\r\nP.S. You should be a little more\r\nindustrious too you would please Mr\r\nSydum better though you are serving\r\nhim very well now which I am\r\nglad to see I hope you will spare\r\nno pains to please him.  You can\r\ndo well here if you will .  Endeavor\r\nto act honestly and honorably in all\r\nthings.  It will add greatly to your\r\nesteem together with strict attention\r\nspecially as you are probably looked\r\nat our of one corner of the eye.  yes\r\nSet no reproach of that kind be cast\r\nupon you.  Sharp eyes are watching you.\r\nAct as if you prided yourself on honor -\r\nable parentage, and disdained to cast\r\n--------------------------------------------------\r\na blot upon it .  Honesty is one of the\r\nbest ways to do this.  You will then be\r\nhonored no matter what your station.\r\nI desire to see you succeed and please\r\nyour employee.   You should attend\r\nto your prayers more recollect you\r\nare dependant on the supreme one\r\nfor every blessing you enjoy.  I am\r\nglad you are leaving off that per\r\nnicious habit  You will improve by\r\nit. I was told in Austin that\nMr Tabar had, unsolicited,\napplied for, and located my land\nclaims, as his own suggestion.\nI had my lands located before\nI left the country, and the fees\nhad been paid, and I do not\nfeel disposed to pay them a seco-\n-nd time.  If however, he will\ngive me what the scrip was worth\nlast winter in Austin, he can have\nthe whole survey. Or in other\nwords, I will take seventeen\n-----------------------------------------\nhundred, and fifty dollars,\nand make a good title, provided\nit is not already sold.
