I am afra= id you do not take as much care of yourself as you ought - But hope by this time your cold may be entirely well. The Gilliard party came off on Tuesday last, Sis went to it with Sam & “[Din]”, was not introduced to a single stranger there not withstand- ing there were several whom she had never seen before_____ That was “foine” for such “foine” people, was it not? Well “[Din]” and I did laugh over the Mrs Harrison & Howland “layout” and I wonder how she will take the cut you gave her It is is just, & true, but pretty hard from so young a Gent, as you are. I have rec- eived two letters from her filled with similar accounts of Miss H’s bad treatm- ent to herself and Mrs Willie Well the old lady has come “clean” round, sent her love to Jennie & Sam in my last letter ------------------------------------------------------ and again calls me her best and truest friend, and says she wants me to close her eyes if she dies in Galveston, & again says that I am a better judge of human nature than she is. she said Dear friend I acknowledge the Corn, so make it be I was perfectly surprised at the amount of Taxes on our property in this Co. there are no back Taxes due on it you went up last Febr & paid them it $23. dollars & some cts, In the last week I have received a printed notice from the Assessor but will inclose it for you to read - What I am to do in case this place & my personal property is to be taken for Taxes on the out lands is more than I can tell. Wonder if I could not make it all over to my children, and in that way dodge them if so, I will do it certain, and date back of the notice This place I think is only valued at 3,000 dol. and what other property I have here not exceeding 3.00 as wekk as I remember therefore I do not see how the Tax can be 33. this mode of confiscation is like very much like consumption - one is flattered with the belief that they realy have property until they come to foot up the Assessors bills when they will see that it has all been consumed Well what is to be done is more that I can tell - I wish you would make the -------------------------------------------------- enquiry whether ones personal property homested & so forth can be sold for Tax on out lands - I have spent the past week with Sis, yesterday came home, she expected the fair wind & tide would bring the Flounder up sometime last night Gov Lubbock said to Gaston that he would make an effort to sell some of our lands But my dear Son I have but little hopes in that quarter or indeed form any other come what will, I am trying to feel comp- osed, but wish I was rid of the annoyance even if I did not own land enough to bury me on - what do I want with it - I can neither eat, drink, ware, or sell it. My prayer is that the year 1870 may bring us better management, or luck, as the case may be - I do so wish to be out of debt, and out of all worry, that is, I wish to be rid of the bulk of my annoyances I do not look for perfect happiness in this life, that is not to be expected - Let me have a full account of yourself with best wishes and much love I remain as ever you loving Mother Mary Jones. return to me the enclosed printed document [In pencil on integral address leaf] Sugar & Coffee Smoothing irons Tobaco [Integral address leaf] Cromwell A Jones Lynchburg
http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/
["admin_set/default-default-managing","admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing
deposited
5138jf135","sq87bt78m","6t053g16v","kk91fk74c
Mrs. Anson Jones Letters
mg74qn11x
5138jf135","sq87bt78m","6t053g16v","kk91fk74c
open
Default Admin Set
["https://id.lib.uh.edu/ark:/84475/do53246r679
Text
public
admin
czepeda6@uh.edu
mg74qn11x
mg74qn11x
mg74qn11x/cv43nx012"],"nesting_collection__deepest_nested_depth_isi":2
["Text
dn39x174x
76bdffcf-12ec-4155-a9a2-5a677a6be854
vt150j53n
vt150j53n
czepeda6@uh.edu
czepeda6@uh.edu
Letter from Mary Jones to Cromwell Anson Jones, 1869 December 11
["admin_set/default
1869-12-11
letters (correspondence)","correspondence
https://findingaids.lib.uh.edu/repositories/2/archival_objects/5776
ark:/84475/do9829b8081
all
Houston & Texas History Research Collection","Mary (Mrs. Anson) Jones Letters","University of Houston Libraries Special Collections
Text
Jones, Mary S.
Jones, C. But for a few lines Sam sent me by Miss Howland who came up last Monday to get Mrs H’s things I would not have known anything about his mov- ments, and even then he did not tell me upon what day he would be up, as it seems he was unable to fix upon a day until he heard from you, or you went down. I am ver[y] glad you was able to go down at that time. Jennie seems like a different person, she seems so happy to have some one to love, & be loved by _ she ------------------------------------------ told me that you kissed her when you took leave at the Island but “you did not call her sister once” So when you write make ample amends in this line. I think we will all like her, and no one will appreciate the acquisition more than I will. And on my part nothing in my power shall be lacking to make her feel at home, she is now the wife of one of my dear children, and of course will she be dear to me also. Mrs Harrison is getting everything moved away Mr. Tabb will take down an other lot of her things tomorrow & so on until everything will be gone which will be a relief to me I assure you, for several reasons ----------------------------------------- Sam told me you did not go to see her, while down I regret this very much as she will most likely not forgive you She wrote me by Miss H that she would take that hundred Acres of land in Matagorda Co. for which her & I own together for what I owed her if I was willing - of course I was willing and glad of the offer & so wrote her that I would make the deed at the earliest moment possible Oh how relieved I felt, you cannot imagine. I think she has gone over lock, stock & Barrel, to that old Iron Clad fraud, Carpet Bager Miss H so make it be, I say Well I have been in a state of termoil for just two weeks with packing up & getting off Mrs H’s things Betsey being -------------------------------------- sick in the midst of it, getting the house to rights after the clearing out &c &c &c Betsey gave Birth to a dead infant last Wednsday week - is doing will tho not yet able to aid me any, Luckily for me two days before this occurred William Burch came to me, and in very poor health, but able to milk, make fires, and do many things which is a relief to me in my predicament. I have been fitting up up the parlor & a bed room for Jennie, and altho I have but little to do with, I have suc ceded in making the old sha nty look quite nice, with the addition of half doz chairs it would be quite comfortable Mrs Ashes sofa is gone and in its stead Jenne & I intend to varnish up the the little lounge B[ ] make a hay mattress ---------------------------------------- For it the coming week, and cover it with one of the Blue Damask Curtains, make a New table cover out of the other one, & the Piano is alrea =dy covered with one, and with white window Curtains, we think it will be quite a nice parlor for poor country folks Today we killed a beef while Sam was here to aid us - I hope Sam will get us something in the way of supplies but he will att- end to this matter. I have knit you a pair of socks which I send you, and if you can send me five hanks of woolen thred I will knit you two pairs more which will make you com -fortable for the winter --------------------------------------- I have not written to Mr Lane as I see no way of my paying Taxes on any of my wild land I trust something may yet Come up for my relief in this quarter - Gaston is hav- ing new brick chimneys put up to his shanty which will make them quite comfortable all are well Sis sent her con- gratulations to Sam & Jenne this morning - Sam told me your wages had been raised, I am glad to hear it hope your health will imp- rove - Write me all about yourself - I may come up in a week or two to see you but don’t look for me as it is uncertain, Give my kind regards to Mr Sydnor At and family & Mr Harrell Jennie sends love to you also -------------------------------------- write me by Sam As ever dear Son Your loving Mother Mary Jones. send me few postage stamps
http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/
["admin_set/default-default-managing","admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing
deposited
tx31qh92k","3n203z29w","gm80hv629","1831ck17m","z890rt51p","dv13zt41p","qr46r1021
Mrs. Anson Jones Letters
mg74qn11x
tx31qh92k","3n203z29w","gm80hv629","1831ck17m","z890rt51p","dv13zt41p","qr46r1021
open
Default Admin Set
["https://id.lib.uh.edu/ark:/84475/do71333380f
Text
public
admin
czepeda6@uh.edu
mg74qn11x
mg74qn11x
mg74qn11x/kh04dp95x"],"nesting_collection__deepest_nested_depth_isi":2
["Text
k3569462h
3b077242-bcf7-4c39-a718-7f3d06d64d93
p5547r53w
p5547r53w
czepeda6@uh.edu
czepeda6@uh.edu
Letter from Mary Jones to Cromwell Anson Jones, 1869 October 24
["admin_set/default
1869-10-24
letters (correspondence)","correspondence
https://findingaids.lib.uh.edu/repositories/2/archival_objects/5772
ark:/84475/do6177fs547
all
Houston & Texas History Research Collection","Mary (Mrs. Anson) Jones Letters","University of Houston Libraries Special Collections
Text
Jones, Mary S.
Jones, C. I do not know but I will, so soon
as some disposition can be made of
this place. Sam still wants it, but as
yet is not ready to take it, & of course
I cannot leave until he is. I am only
Staying here to take care of a home for
us all, and in the mean time having
some wood cut to pay off Mr Bell with
There has been some old [wisecracking] with
Wm Birch to keep me from getting him
and as yet I do not know whether he will
come here or not, will most likely hear
today. He was here last Sunday & told me
that he would certainly come by the last
of the week, I shall expect him sometime
today, if he comes at all
----------------------------------------------------
I spoke to Bonner about my Goliad Tax
matter, he said that man Lane had never
paid $19;95cts taxes, that it could not be at
most more than six dollars, and that it was
on my list & that if I paid it to him by
the first of December it would be all
right - But yesterday I received an
other form Lane urging me to
remit the amount without delay and
at his risk first registering the letter
and taking a receipt for the same which
receipt I would have to send him as
proof my having registered a letter with
a certain amount or money it &c &c
I will not however send it even if I have it to
send until I can get the advise of some
one upon the subject - And as I have noone
here to whom I can apply for advise I will
send the letters to you, and I wish you
to show them to some one upon whose ad-
vice I can rely & let me have a reply
and the letters back the first safe
opportunity - I am so sorry your health
continues poor. How would it do to
take Hoatellers Bitters The kind I usual
=ly take is made of Columbo, Ginseng, rhewbarb
Root Aloes, with a few pieces of [sinamon]
and a few cloves orange peelings, These
latter aromatics are only to relieve the
bitter of the other things Remember all these
things should be put into hot water and
allowed to soak for three hours or even
longer, just put water enough to cover
them, and when soaked sufficiently
put water roots and all in a quart
Bottle and fill up with good whiskey
[letter ends
