  • C. F. McElhinney standing beside Corbin J. Robertson and Wilhelmina Robertson. Charles Flemming McElhinney (commonly known as C. F. McElhinney or “Mr. Mac”) moved to Houston in 1934, taking the position of Assistant Director of Curriculum and Research for the Houston Independent School District until 1939. He became Director of Research from 1939 to 1945 and business manager for the University of Houston, served as a staff assistant to E. E. Oberholtzer, and was interim president of the University from 1953 to 1954. He was Vice-President and Business Manager from 1950 to 1962, Senior Vice-President for Finance and Treasurer from 1962 to 1973, and was the coach of the first athletic team fielded by the university (ice hockey) in 1934 when the University was still the Houston Junior College. McElhinney was also a faculty member in the Department of Education. He retired in August 1973 and the Graduate Studies building was renamed in his honor.
