  • Inscription on back: "On March 31, 1832 Wm. Stanbery - member of congress from Ohio in the cource (sic) of a broad criticism of the administration, inquired ‘Was not the late Secretary of War removed because of his attempt fraudulently to give Governor Houston the contract for indian rations?’ Sam Houston wanted to settle the matter there but J K Polk hustled him outside to cool off - However on April 13th Houston met Stanbery late that evening by chance and beat him with his hickory cane. Stanbery drew his pistol, put it to Houston's chest, and pulled the trigger - but it misfired - Later Houston appeared in court over the matter - See Marquis James ‘The Raven’ Page 162-173 for more”
  • Inscription on front: Written above, "Q: How did Mr. ___ behave? Did he shew much pluck? A: Well Sir, I can say but little for his pluck, but I assure you he shewed considerable bottom." Written below, "Low on his back the HERO lies/The welkin echoing to his cries/With feet upraised and hands outspread-/’Lordy;’ oh don't! Please Sir!! he said."
