  • Caption: "Intertype: Modern newspapers usually use one of two makes of typesetting machines, one is the Linotype, the other, shown here, is the Intertype. Using the machines typewriter like keyboard, the operator sets copy, assigned him in slugs. Pressure on the keys of the machine's keyboard releases brass matrices from the magazines they are carried in at the top of the machine. Each matrice has a letter mold in its face. The matrice drops automaticly into the required column width line just as the typewriter types letters into words, words into lines on paper. The column width line of matrices is then automaticly moved in front of the electric casting pot, and hot metal is forced against the letter molds on their faces. Modern typesetting machines have detachable magazines of type matrices making it possable for the paper to vary its type from page to page and increase its readability."
