I have always found calomel\ntaken at the beginning of a severe cold \u0026amp;\ncough to break up the attack sooner than\nalmost anything I have tried, or seen\ntrid.  Together with mustard plasters\napplied over the lungs. A good way\nto make them is to spread a plaster\nof Tallow on a piece of domestic large\nenough to cover the chest well and\nover this sprinkle mustard not too thick, and press\nit well into the tallow which keeps\nit from blistering.  And you can wear\nit for any length of time, or until\nentirely relieved.  A plaster made in this\nway keeps up a constant moisture, and\nwill in a weeks time, produce pimples and\nredness tho not much soreness.  I have\nused them upon Elliot with good effect\nan other  Put a pint of Tar in some\n-thing and keep it covered with water\nand drink it whenever you possibly\n-------------------------------------------------------\ncan.  You cannot my dear child be\ntoo careful of yourself, use all pre\n-cautions or rather the best remedies\nto rid yourself of a cough.  I have\nalways tried to be careful to bring\nyou all my children up constantly guard\n-ing against colds \u0026amp; coughs \u0026amp; as \nyour Father had in the earlier part\nof life been a sufferer from weak\nlungs and was never as long as he lived\nbeen entirely free for a hacking cough\nand frequently had attacks of [p]neumonia\nand in all such attacks [had] a very severe\ncough  he invariably took Calomel and\napplied a Flublister plaster  And as\nsoon as the the blister was drawn \u0026amp; the\nCalomel had it effect he would feel\nRelieved - cough easier, and expectorate\nFreely.  I have thought of nothing scarce\n-ly but you since I received your letter, and wish\nso much I could be with you.  Come\nup in a few days if you are not very\nmuch better.  I know I could do some\n-thing to relieve you\n\nI \u0026amp; Sallie have\nreceived three letters from Sam \nhe is evidently greatly delighted with\n--------------------------------------------------------\nhis surroundings \u0026amp; prospects of success\nI am not less delighted \u0026amp; happy that\nhis prospects are so bright and that\nfor once in his life he has something\npleasent and encouraging to occupy\nhis time and talents if he realy\nhas any talents.  And I think he has\nand that it is at work in the right \nchannel\n\nSallie will open her little\nschool next Monday she has alre\n-ady engaged six perhaps eight\npupils as there is some dissatisfied [sic]\nwith the present Teacher here I feel\nalmost certain she will soon build\nup a nice little school.  It seems a\ndoubtful matter yet about the\nmusic class, she has not had the\nstrength to go around to see the peo-\nple yet\n\nMr. Ropers of this place is using\nLemons as directed in the enclosed recipe directed\nTry it, he assured me that he found much\nrelief and benefit\n\nMr. Ashe will tell\nyou what Gastons present plans are abou\nabout his mill \u0026amp; Gin.  But for the\n-----------------------------------------------------\nwant of seventy five dollars to make a\nfirst payment upon a lot he will be\ndelayed until some one else may be\ninduced to come in and occupy the\nplace he wants, and that would be so\nadvantageous to him\n\nLet me hear from you in a \nday or two.
