But\r\noh how badly he looks.  Doctor Jordan has\r\npromised to prepare him some medicine\r\nthat he says will reduce his spleen and\r\ncure him, this done he will soon be well;\r\nhis mind has been in such a state of excit-\r\nment, he needs quiet and care, he seems much\r\ndepressed \u0026amp; looks so thin \u0026amp; sad.  I had some\r\nmaterial on hand and cut him out two shirts, Sallie\r\nand Mrs. Jordan are making them today \u0026amp; Mrs\r\nJ has given material for one pair of drawers \u0026amp;\r\nSallie one pair.  I will get him some more\r\nundershirts which will make him quite\r\ncomfortable until he is able to do something.  \r\nI agree with you that he ought to leave\r\nLynchburg \u0026amp; now is a good time to make make\r\na start from there as he has nothing left.  But\r\nwhere will he go \u0026amp; what is there he can do, except\r\n----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nto go some where \u0026amp; commence work,  I suppose his tools\r\nare all washed away too.  It would take money to start\r\na sheep ranch, but of this he has said nothing to me\r\nas yet  I doubt if he is suited for such business, not\r\nalone certainly.  If he had means to start with, and\r\nI could live with him it might do.   during the\r\nrain \u0026amp; storm we were without fire as the kitchen\r\nleaked all over \u0026amp; we had no other chance for fire\r\nbut in the Cooking stove.  Gastons circumstances\r\nwill not now admit if his getting any other\r\nplace, he thinks of wintering it here in this\r\nopen house, building a chimney of sticks \u0026amp; dirt\r\nto Sallies room.  I do not know what to do\r\nwith myself, am as I would prefer almost anything\r\nto having to spend the winter amid the nois[e] \u0026amp;\r\nand discomfort that would exist, if I had the means\r\nI could perhaps get a small place here where I\r\ncould have some quiet if not much else.\r\nAgain I have thought of writing to my Sisters\r\nto see of either of them had a room with a\r\nfire place in it that they could let me have\r\nand stay with one of them this winter\r\nWhat would you advise,  Oh how I regret\r\never giving up my home.  I am daily remin-\r\nded of poor old Mrs. Ashe, but she fortunately\r\ncould die and get out of her discomfort\r\n \r\nI don't wish to distress you,\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------\r\n[written upside down, in pencil, across the 3rd page]\r\n\r\nOld Mr. Thompson Col Sneets fatherinlaw died a\r\nfew days since at Grand Lake - it was he who list his\r\nhouse by fire.\r\n------------------------------------------------------------\r\nno, far from it.  I know you have had to\r\nstruggle hard against poverty to make\r\na start, greatly to my sorrow and regret.  Is there\r\nnothing I have that could be sold, to procure\r\nme a little home of my own once more.  I can\r\nlive here as well as any other place, and\r\nperhaps as cheap, or cheaper, as wood is an item\r\nand is plentiful here, then I could be near\r\nto Sallie.  Sam will likely stay with\r\nus some little time do not know how long\r\nat any rate until he is better.  I am so glad\r\nthe destitute about the Burg are being provided\r\nfor by the Houstonians,  have at last received\r\nmany papers from you giving accounts of the suf\r\n-fering all along the coast.  Oh how terrible it\r\nis.  I read with much pride, and pleasure, the\r\nmention made of you and your opinion as\r\none of the Houston bar relative to the ten\r\nure of Supreme \u0026amp; other Judges.  Mrs Judge\r\nBell saw the mention of you before my paper came \u0026amp; loaned us\r\nthe paper of same date.  Sallies health con-\r\ntinous poor _  Your two letters of Sept. 18th\r\n\u0026amp; 19th reached me today.  The letter you enclosed was\r\nfrom Mrs Ashe of Sept.. 11th  all were at her fathers\r\nshe was complaining some but the children were \r\nwell, she spoke of starting back about the 26th\r\nwhich was yesterday.  Said there was considerable\r\n--------------------------------------------------------------\r\nsickness prevailing, had not heard from Mr Ashe\r\nat date of writing and was feeling terribly\r\nhome sick.  Said everything liked so changed\r\nshe wanted to get away \u0026amp; that no place was\r\nlike Texas\r\n\r\nwrite me soon\r\n\r\nAffectionately Your\r\nMother\r\nMary Jones.\r\n\r\nSam has got the Doct Jordans prescription\r\nfilled \u0026amp; will commence taking it tomorrow\r\nSallie has just received a letter from Miss\r\nLenna Gaillard she says all my umbrella [      ]\r\ntrees were blown down but the houses are stan\r\n-ding.  several of their buildings were blown down\r\npart of the Galery to their house Gin was\r\nleft, but their blacksmith shop taken away\r\nmuch damage to their corn \u0026amp; cotton as\r\none Cotton house blew down, her father\r\nhad been sick for some time but at date of her\r\nletter was better   he cannot sleep at night\r\nsince Freddies death\r\n\r\nMJ\r\n\r\nSam says please write him any information\r\nyou may be able to gather about the Burg if the\r\nwater is down Yet?
