To-day I received you letter of yesterday\nbut not until about one o’clock, so could\nnot dispatch this morning the office being closed\nI am informed though the mail leaves this\nevening, so this will reach you to - day or to-\nmorrow morning _\n\t\t     Of course Ma, if it is more\nagreeable to you to make the proposed ar-\nrangement to board with Mrs Golden, I am\ncontented _  I have been actuated in all things\nby a desire to promote you r comfort \u0026amp; happi-\nness first, my own pleasure being second-\ndary _   In approving of your suggestion of board-\ning here when you made it to me.  I thought \nthat if you boarded at all, it would be the\nbest place for you, aside from the fact that\n------------------------------------------------------------\nafter our eight year separation, I might oc-\ncasionally see something of you : but of course\nif it si not agreeable to you or a cause of\nunhappiness, I would not have your adhere to\nit for a moment _  When I speak of your\ncomfort \u0026amp; Happiness, I mean that which\nwill be permanent \u0026amp; lasting \u0026amp; not that\nwhich is only transitory \u0026amp; purchased at the\nexpense of deprivation \u0026amp; self denial in the future\nTo this end it has been the desire of my\nheart to see your means in such a shape\nthat you might have a permanent and suf-\nficient income assured to you without fret-\nting away the principal until all should be\ngone _  It is with this view and for this _ _ _ _\nthat I have thought it unwise at this time for\nyou to invest means in a place _\n                  Now I do not write my dear moth-\ner to say for you not to buy or to interpose\nany opposition to your plans.  You ask my\nadvice and I will give it with my views, hav-\ning the question to you for decision.  Beginning\nwith the time of my recollection of such matters\nwhere we moved on the Bay, I do not remem-\n------------------------------------------------------------\nber that with our entire force at work we\never came out ahead, even if we made wnds\nmeet _  Since the war with both your sons \u0026amp;\nSoon-in-law or the place mostly or all the time\nit has even been worse and each succeed-\ning year has witnessed with the utmost ex-\nentious our place steadily going to decay \u0026amp;\n_ _ _ \u0026amp; we in spite of sales of land and other\nproperty going in debt and becoming poorer\nday by day and exhausting our resources.  I\nstate this in no spirit of complaint (for certainly\nyou \u0026amp; all of us did the best we could) but simply\nas facts \u0026amp; past experience which may serve as\na guide for future action _   I cannot see now\nhow you with many years added to your life\nand infirm in health \u0026amp; all of us away from\nyou Sam expecting at any time to go away\n\u0026amp; Gastons plans \u0026amp; movements uncertain, can\ndo better on a place containing five acres\nof land.  It is time that one years board at $25 _\nwould make the first payment on the place, but\nI can not see, considering purely the question\nof economy how you would have money _\nCount up the actual cost of provisions, hire\n---------------------------------------------------------\nof servant, accidental expenses interest on\ninvestment^wear \u0026amp; tear of place etc etc, I cannot see any differ-\nin cast _   I cannot see that the place\nwould return a cent of income _  Very few\nfarmers with full ability to labor \u0026amp; give\nclose attention to all details of business are\nmore than keeping even ( \u0026amp; may not doing\nthat ) except on large farms in rich sec-\ntions of country\u0026amp; with the aid of stock etc\nconsidered as a purchase to sell again I\ncannot see any investment in the place _\nThousands of pieces of improved real Es-\ntate are selling at the same discount\nwhere there is a reasonable prospect of\ngetting rent for them if they are not oc-\ncupied.  It is possible that you might\nget what you gave if you have plenty of\ntime in which to make the sale _  In my hum-\nble judgment it is not a first rate in-\nvestment with a view to selling again _\n           But as I said before Ma, I inter-\npose no objection.  I have expressed my views\nabove frankly \u0026amp; plainly in response to your\nrequest _  I have said nothing about the cast\nof going to housekeeping which is considera-\nble and which never returns cast in case\nof sale _   Still if you think it best to buy\n-----------------------------------------------------------\nand are satisfied that the title to the place\nis clear \u0026amp; that it is free from any incum-\nbance, do so and I will furnish the\ndesired account to refund to Dr Jordan _\n  Let me know what you have concluded\n\u0026amp; what the amount is \u0026amp; I will take steps to pro-\ncure it \u0026amp; give you any other assistance in\nmy power in furtherance of your wishes _\nIf you conclude to board witht Mrs G- in the \nmeantime or permanently, I will cheer-\nfully furnish the desired amount \u0026amp; what-\never more is necessary to you comfort \u0026amp; en-\njoyment _\n       I will take steps to have your things\nhere packed up as you direct forwarded to you\nthe first leisure moment I have _  I learned\nafter returning to town that the lady I as-\nsisted on the train was Mrs Bringhurst neé\nMiss Houston, \u0026amp; thought it a very pleasant\ncoincidence _  I was sorry I did not known\nwho it was sooner _  I am very busy yet with\nCounty Court .  will get through in a week\nor ten days _\n                      With much love my dear Mother\nI remain, as ever _   Affectionately\n                        Your Son  -  C.
