My heart leaped for joy
to know you had returned safely after
so long a trip. I am thankful too that
it was in every way pleasant. I am certain
you have been benefited in many
ways, and that it will ever be a pleasant
era to recur to. I long to see you as I know
you will have much of interest to com-
municate. Sallie & I are still reading
the New York Tribune (which I suppose
you sent me) which we find very in-
teresting one can almost can imagine they
have been to the Centennial, at any rate
all who did not visit it will never
know how much they have missed
I have no doubt you are quite busy, and
if it was not so difficult to get to and from this
be[ ]ghted thicket I would go down to see you
----------------------------------------------------------
But just at this time I am feeling quite unwell
have an attack of sore throat coming on
will take medicine tonight, which always
relieves me in three or four days. I am still
feeling some inconvenience for the severe hurt
I received some four weeks since which I wrote
you about directed to New York . Sam was
out here three weeks ago doing some work on
Gastons press. I do not think he is doing
much from all I can learn He would have
worked at the Factory indeed did work there
a short time but they do not pay any one he
said consequently quit. Mr. Grove is here just
out from Willis and says Sam wants the place
Shep has been in treaty for where Mr. Hampton
lives which is just above Mr Wiggins. I wrote to him &
asked him to come out here & put me up a room
when here doing Gas work he did not allude to it. He is now
doing some work for Charlie Jordan on the
Bar room, I suppose to pay his board there
While you were gone Mrs. Ashe wrote to me urg-
ing me to make her a visit & to be there when
you returned. I could not go then as I was &
---------------------------------------------------------------------
am still hoping to go our to see my Sisters
when I do go down, so as to kill two birds with one stone
Gaston is determined to get our of here for several
reasons, one of which is he does not get sufficient to
do here for his Gin & Mill to justify staying . His family
may remain here until spring, indeed he has
not as yet any decided upon a plan of operations, is now
ginning a few bales of cotton. We have all had
good health up to this time, which is something
to be thankful for. His Gs Cheatham cotton is
doing well. his corn gathered & his horses all fat
The Stotts family have all moved to Willis, Old
Lynchburg & on the Bay seems to be on the down
hill grade. I am afraid we will not be able to
sell our interest there for some time. Gaston
has sent to Houston for a Condenser & when it
comes to Willis he will go in for it & I have thought
some of going in with him & so on down to Houston
provided I am well Will in that case leave
Elliot with Sis, but dislike to [ ] her with
the care of him as her health is not good tho
the cool Northers are bracing her up some
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mr. Long of Houston spent two days with us recently
we found him quite agreeable, he professed
to be a great admirer of yours &c &c

With kind regards to our friends in Houston
and much love for yourself from

Your Mother
Mary Jones

Sallie says "why you don't come up" and tell
us all about your trip Sam kept me
posted in your movments during your absence
@type":"sc:Sequence","@id":"https://digitalcollections.lib.uh.edu/concern/texts/bc386j47r/manifest/sequence/normal

@type":"sc:Canvas","@id":"https://digitalcollections.lib.uh.edu/concern/texts/bc386j47r/manifest/canvas/1544bp30x
[{"@type":"oa:Annotation
sc:painting
@type":"dctypes:Image","@id":"https://media.lib.uh.edu/images/1544bp30x%2Ffiles%2F8632a69e-03d9-4b68-bf91-f72432328dcc/full/600,/0/default.jpg
{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://media.lib.uh.edu/images/1544bp30x%2Ffiles%2F8632a69e-03d9-4b68-bf91-f72432328dcc
http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json
https://digitalcollections.lib.uh.edu/concern/texts/bc386j47r/manifest/canvas/1544bp30x"}]},{"@type":"sc:Canvas","@id":"https://digitalcollections.lib.uh.edu/concern/texts/bc386j47r/manifest/canvas/c534fp11g
[{"@type":"oa:Annotation
sc:painting
@type":"dctypes:Image","@id":"https://media.lib.uh.edu/images/c534fp11g%2Ffiles%2Fef63e4f8-bd11-4465-84a8-e2fbe2723e48/full/600,/0/default.jpg
{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://media.lib.uh.edu/images/c534fp11g%2Ffiles%2Fef63e4f8-bd11-4465-84a8-e2fbe2723e48
http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json
https://digitalcollections.lib.uh.edu/concern/texts/bc386j47r/manifest/canvas/c534fp11g"}]},{"@type":"sc:Canvas","@id":"https://digitalcollections.lib.uh.edu/concern/texts/bc386j47r/manifest/canvas/7h149q15f
[{"@type":"oa:Annotation
sc:painting
@type":"dctypes:Image","@id":"https://media.lib.uh.edu/images/7h149q15f%2Ffiles%2Fed984ef7-bfd0-4276-86d3-76aced060765/full/600,/0/default.jpg
{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://media.lib.uh.edu/images/7h149q15f%2Ffiles%2Fed984ef7-bfd0-4276-86d3-76aced060765
http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json
https://digitalcollections.lib.uh.edu/concern/texts/bc386j47r/manifest/canvas/7h149q15f"}]},{"@type":"sc:Canvas","@id":"https://digitalcollections.lib.uh.edu/concern/texts/bc386j47r/manifest/canvas/ft848q872
[{"@type":"oa:Annotation
sc:painting
@type":"dctypes:Image","@id":"https://media.lib.uh.edu/images/ft848q872%2Ffiles%2Fbbe1a2ba-bc75-4f73-a22e-61709e2cd425/full/600,/0/default.jpg
{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://media.lib.uh.edu/images/ft848q872%2Ffiles%2Fbbe1a2ba-bc75-4f73-a22e-61709e2cd425
http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json
https://digitalcollections.lib.uh.edu/concern/texts/bc386j47r/manifest/canvas/ft848q872"}]}]}]}
