May 25th 1872\n\nMy Dear Son\n\nOn Monday last I left San Jacinto\non board a Tug about 2 Oclock reached Mr Galliards\nafter four Oclock, had to walk from Sams to the\nwharf near Harlands Stone, and again from\nthe old Chubb ship yard up to the House\nWhen I reached there I was completely exhaus\n-ted had to stay all night was kindly enter\n-tained \u0026amp; by morning felt much refreshed and\nwent home on horse back Tuesday morning\nwith Gaston who came for me.  I was perf-\nectly delighted to get home \u0026amp; after resting the\nfirst day I went out to the garden and looked\nover it.  I never saw more vegetables on one \nlittle piece of ground we will have plenty\nof fruit   Sallie has four cows up\nmakes plenty of butter.  She has over\nthree hundred young chickens she\nsays when you come to see us again she\ncan feast you on all these good things.\nDear son I improve very slowly just\nas I feared would be the case  I am only\nable to walk as far as the Garden occa-\nsionally.  I am feeble in every part of my\nsystem \u0026amp; very nervous can scarcely\n-------------------------------------------------------\nwrite as you see.  For the past twenty four\nhours have not felt able to set up any until\nthis evening I feel a little stronger now\nUpon first being able to sit up I found\nmyself greatly reduced in flesh and no\nstrength at all.  I could not set up after\nyou left for ten days, and then not long\nat a time.  I try to feel hopeful and to think\nI will recover my usual strength again\n\nSallies health continues poor but she\nhas Dave who does almost all the work\nhe milks too.  She has the place look-\ning like former days  except there is\nno crop growing for want of a good fence\n\nSam \u0026amp; family were all in better health\nwhen I left  Gaston is still taking\noff Brick from R[     ]s .   I had hoped\nto have received a letter from you\nbefore I left the \"burg\"  Oh Sam is at\nwork getting his five dollars a day I\nhope his health may not fail\n\nI cannot write more\n\nAs ever your loving Mother\nMary Jones\n\nI will send this up by Mr Stuarts family\non the Sunday Boat\n--------------------------------------------------\nGaston has consulted Doct. Heard in regard to\nSallies bad health\u0026amp; she is using his re\nmedies.
