Description
  • Republic of Texas promissory note for $50, No. 81. An Act of Congress of 12 June 1837 authorized the issuance of $500,000 in promissory notes, of various denominations, bearing a rate of ten percent interest, and payable one year from the date of issue. Initially, the notes were printed, and were known as "star money" because of the five-pointed star on the face. Later series of the notes were printed from engraved plates.
