I am confident your business will be in\r\nreality worth more even if it is slower in\r\ncoming in and in small instalments beside[s]\r\nyou are young enough yet awhile to wait\r\nfor honors of office. Cook deserves it and\r\nI am glad he was thought of\r\n\r\na few days since I wrote to Mrs. Ashe\r\nAm sorry to hear of John B\r\nhaving been sick \"Sis\" mentioned that Mrs.\r\nDuke \u0026amp; Miss Jennie Gillette had gone North\r\nto spend the summer  Suppose the superin-\r\ntendent must be flush  has he paid you \r\nyet??   Wont Miss Jennie splurge when\r\nshe returns\r\n---------------------------------------------------------------\r\n[Written upside down along the top of page 2]\r\n\r\nBrother has several varieties of nice grapes now getting\r\nRipe I wish you all could have some\r\n--------------------------------------------------------------- \r\nBrothers health is improving all the time, yet he is\r\nvery low spirited much of the time is dissatisfied\r\nwith the way things have gone, is unable to see that\r\nall the hard times is owing to this long Radical\r\nmisrule we have been living under as well as to\r\nbad crop years, he wants to sell out \u0026amp; get away from it\r\nall.  I the think he would ruin his family if he ever\r\nsells as he is not able to do any hard labor, and in\r\nall probability the fatigue would put an end to his\r\nlife as he cannot bear the least fatigue\r\n\r\nI saw a lady\r\nwho had been at Lampases Springs.  she says that Co.\r\nis improving, land there is worth from one to ten\r\nand fifteen dollars pr Acre.  have you taken\r\nany steps yet in our land matter so as to prevent\r\nthe statute of limitation from baring us.  You\r\nwill remember parties have been on it now\r\nfor several years.  I realy do believe it would pay\r\nto look after it Brother \u0026amp; I talk some of going up there\r\nthis fall, but this may all be talk on his part.  I\r\nwould go in a minute.  I  hope you will leave Houston\r\nin case yellow [fever] comes, and glad your health is so good\r\nI am in perfect health, baby is daily improving is \r\nbright \u0026amp; playful.  Yesterday more papers came which\r\nis a treat I assure you.  I see you are employed for the\r\nCo. in a case. How is our\r\nEddy getting along?  \"Sis\" wrote me that Miss [Myra]\r\nJohnson was in search of a school, said she had\r\nsome prospect of getting one in Houston.  Aid her\r\nif you can, for her dear good old mothers sake\r\nas well as for her own helpless sake.  Sallie\r\nenquired if there was any opening in this sec\r\ntion for her.  I do not think there is. As Mr Lee\r\nand two ladies teach the one near here, which\r\nis a large scool, distant half way between\r\nhere \u0026amp; Dresden.  We pass through Dresden\r\ncoming from Corsicana to Brothers, his place\r\nis North west from both places\r\n\r\nYesterday \u0026amp; today\r\nthe air is delightful, very cool, both day \u0026amp; night\r\nI find it much more pleasant here than near\r\nthe Coast.  I am constantly reminded of our old\r\nhome in Washington Co. Where I am writing\r\nI can see the Apple trees. I often wish I could\r\nsend you one limb full they look so pretty\r\nI think of you often dear darling son strugling\r\nalong with poverty. and pray this may not last\r\nalways, that your last days may not be like \r\nmine, but that you may be blessed with\r\n------------------------------------------------------------\r\nall I believe you deserve of this worlds good, and\r\nhealth to enjoy it.
