The two\r\npapers you sent came with it, all of which gave me much\r\nreal pleasure.  And since their reception your second\r\nletter of Nov 8th has been received.  And when I read\r\nit I regretted not having written you, if but a dozen\r\nlines to let you know Sams trade with Col Smith\r\nhad proved a failure very greatly to his disappoint-\r\nment as much or more on your account than his\r\nown.  The wednesday after you left he launched his\r\nBoat and the Wednesday after that went to Gal[veston] with a\r\nsmall load of wood which only enabled him to pay \r\noff Charlie the Irishman who had been here assisting\r\nhim and purchase such supplies as his family\r\nwere in need of,  he will start down with an other\r\nload in a few days.   When he will have to Regis\r\nter as he did not stay to do so before.  I believe he\r\nhas pretty much given up going to Lynchburg, has the\r\noffer of cutting for one half wood for one half on a small tract of land be-\r\nlonging to Mrs Francks just above Mr. Bushes, he\r\nwould also have the privilege of taking off her half\r\non shares or could purchase it on the bank at what-\r\never it was worth.  I do not think all this will pay\r\nhim as well as more active business at the\r\n“Burg” but until he is out of debt he feels anxious\r\nto run the Boat himself.  It looks well and does fine\r\nin all respects and can carry eight cords or nearly so\r\nSams intends sending you some money just as \r\nsoon as possible I do not know how soon that\r\nwill be\r\n--------------------------------------------------------------\r\nMy darling Son you little know how anxious I \r\ndesire to have you supplied with means to sustain\r\nyourself until you can realize means from your \r\njust labor.  I saw Gaston a few days since, and as I had\r\nnot written you asked him to do so, and to send you\r\nsome money at the earliest time possible.  You may\r\nhave to call on Mr. Sydnor for a small sum in addi\r\n-tion to what you have had.  I trust this thing will soon be\r\nat an end as Gaston \u0026amp; Sam will be able in a little time\r\nto keep you supplied\r\n\r\nI am truly glad to hear your health\r\nhas improved so much.  I think if you are at all\r\ncareful in regard to diet and exposure you will soon\r\nbe in perfect health.  I rejoice also that you are so pleas-\r\nently situated and are in the way of making arguable\r\nacquaintances, and are in  atmosphere calculated\r\nto improve you in so many way[s].  Study human\r\nnature and “tact” as well as books.  I have a profound\r\nrespect for “book larning” but it wont succeed as well \r\nin this fast age as tact combined with a good deal\r\nof humbug under all circumstances keep up\r\nappearances and good spirits.  I shall never give\r\nit up until my dying day that better times are\r\nnot coming.  And but for this some hope what\r\nwould become of the best of us.  I am still here\r\nhave moved out some of the things in my room and\r\nput up my little stove which keeps us quite\r\ncomfortable, put it up where the secretary stood\r\nI was so certain Sam would move to Lynchburg that I \r\nasked Gaston \u0026amp; Sallie to come here and live with\r\nme, all the rent I asked them was my board and\r\nclothing as the place would have to under go re-\r\npairs before it was habitable no certain time was\r\nagreed upon as none of us can tell what a year may\r\nbring both, in consequence of my offer Gaston\r\nrented his mothers place and could move\r\n----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nhere in two or three weeks.  After he told me he had\r\nrented out his place I spoke to Sam about it when\r\nhe told me he had given up all idea of moving to the\r\nBurg and the calculation is clearly to stay here. I of course\r\nfeel in a very unpleasant situation all round.  You\r\nwell know I have given up the place to Sam for two\r\nyears past for nothing in the way of rent just for the\r\nsake of assisting him all I could beside amply sup-\r\nporting myself all last year.  I can but think it\r\nrather a hard case that, I cannot now have my\r\nhome to use as I please.  God knows I am willing\r\nto make every sacrifice within  the bounds of \r\nreason to aid him, but the place is daily falling\r\nto pieces which is a source of annoyance to me\r\nfences all down house nearly so, and in discom-\r\nfort for all as they now are.   My present deter\r\nmination is to leave here just as soon as Gaston\r\ngets settled, for two reasons, I cannot witness the utter\r\ndesolation of this place and call it home secondly\r\nI have promised Sallie to stay with her until\r\nshe can get her health reestablished if that is\r\na thing possible, and I well know she cannot\r\nbe cured in any very short time.  I feel it my\r\nduty to give her whatever assistance is in my\r\npower.  But enough of this, all things still work \r\nout right I confidently believe\r\n\r\nThe ambrotype was not\r\nreturned to me by the Appletons  it like the man-\r\nuscript I presume is destroyed.  This likeness was\r\ntaken by Brady of New York and I think you father \r\ntold me they kept one for themselves in case the same\r\nparties are still in New York  you might enquire\r\nof them and doubtless they would send you one, some\r\nleading paper of that City would have their card\r\nin it in case they are still there a thing not impos\r\n-sible I think\r\n------------------------------------------------------------------\r\nI will be very glad to get any papers you may be\r\nable to send me I saw  your card in the Daily\r\nNews Samuel brought up before the papers you\r\nsent came.  You may rest assured I often think  \r\nof you and with feelings of pride and pleasure\r\nGod our Heavenly Father only know how anxious I am\r\nfor your success I could die in peace if I could\r\nsee all my children settled and doing well\r\n\r\nLittle Charles spent a week with me here we gath-\r\nered Pecans and Walnuts at the old Brook place\r\nand what Walnuts were here.  Little baby walks\r\nquite well now and is perfectly well.  My own\r\nhealth is tolerable good I have rheumatism in\r\nmy knees which at times makes me quite lame\r\nbut for it I would be very well all the time\r\n\r\nWrite me as often as possible as you letters\r\ngive me much pleasure.
