  • Transcript: [A newspaper clipping on “The Uses of the Lemon.” is attached upside down along the top of page 1 of the letter] Willis March 20th 1878 My Dear Son I wished so much to write you yesterday in regard to your cold & cough but could not. I have always found calomel taken at the beginning of a severe cold & cough to break up the attack sooner than almost anything I have tried, or seen trid. Together with mustard plasters applied over the lungs. A good way to make them is to spread a plaster of Tallow on a piece of domestic large enough to cover the chest well and over this sprinkle mustard not too thick, and press it well into the tallow which keeps it from blistering. And you can wear it for any length of time, or until entirely relieved. A plaster made in this way keeps up a constant moisture, and will in a weeks time, produce pimples and redness tho not much soreness. I have used them upon Elliot with good effect an other Put a pint of Tar in some -thing and keep it covered with water and drink it whenever you possibly ------------------------------------------------------- can. You cannot my dear child be too careful of yourself, use all pre -cautions or rather the best remedies to rid yourself of a cough. I have always tried to be careful to bring you all my children up constantly guard -ing against colds & coughs & as your Father had in the earlier part of life been a sufferer from weak lungs and was never as long as he lived been entirely free for a hacking cough and frequently had attacks of [p]neumonia and in all such attacks [had] a very severe cough he invariably took Calomel and applied a Flublister plaster And as soon as the the blister was drawn & the Calomel had it effect he would feel Relieved - cough easier, and expectorate Freely. I have thought of nothing scarce -ly but you since I received your letter, and wish so much I could be with you. Come up in a few days if you are not very much better. I know I could do some -thing to relieve you I & Sallie have received three letters from Sam he is evidently greatly delighted with -------------------------------------------------------- his surroundings & prospects of success I am not less delighted & happy that his prospects are so bright and that for once in his life he has something pleasent and encouraging to occupy his time and talents if he realy has any talents. And I think he has and that it is at work in the right channel Sallie will open her little school next Monday she has alre -ady engaged six perhaps eight pupils as there is some dissatisfied [sic] with the present Teacher here I feel almost certain she will soon build up a nice little school. It seems a doubtful matter yet about the music class, she has not had the strength to go around to see the peo- ple yet Mr. Ropers of this place is using Lemons as directed in the enclosed recipe directed Try it, he assured me that he found much relief and benefit Mr. Ashe will tell you what Gastons present plans are abou about his mill & Gin. But for the ----------------------------------------------------- want of seventy five dollars to make a first payment upon a lot he will be delayed until some one else may be induced to come in and occupy the place he wants, and that would be so advantageous to him Let me hear from you in a day or two. With much love from your Mother Mary Jones I am certain you are offered a fair price for the Bastrop land. Your Father told me it was very poor, worth nothing only for grazing purposes. We all enj- oyed Mr. Ashes visit so much He can make you comfortable here or, rather com- paratively so. excuse all my nervous blunders
